With a fixed set of rules, card games, dice games and board games are clearly defined activities which delightfully do not entail negotiation with others. Many children find it a nice relief to delve into a game with clear rules as a contrast to wild, free play with their friends at kindergarten or school.

At the same time, playing games gives your child an opportunity to experience (and cope with) losing. We recommend that you don't always let your child win when you play a game. Learning how to cope with the disappointment of losing in a safe environment together with you helps make children robust and resilient. After all, you will not be there to shield your child from defeat and disappointment later in life when they have to handle situations on their own.
