PUKY: Safe, high-quality balance bikes and scooters
For more than 60 years, PUKY has focused on developing high-quality vehicles for children, placing special emphasis on design, construction, production, and safety. PUKY is a German toy company which, true to German tradition, is certainly characterised by thoroughness, precision, and reliability in their production of ride-on vehicles for children. A PUKY balance bike is always a great choice for your child's first vehicle.
Today, children’s ride-on vehicles are much more than just a tricycle with a cargo box, a scooter, and a bicycle. Nowadays, there is a wealth of ride-ons out there with one or more classic features. There are many different models to choose from, all of which help inspire and motivate kids to get rolling and use their wheels much more than they used to.
This surge in popularity is largely thanks to PUKY balance bikes, which were among the first on the market over 20 years ago. With PUKY, you get high-quality scooters and balance bikes that will last for many years and can be handed down to younger children or sold second-hand.
PUKY offers a 5-year warranty on bike frames and handlebars when you register your purchase on the PUKY website.

Get to know PUKY's abbreviations and model codes here
The only challenge with PUKY is the many abbreviations in the names of their balance bikes. When you don't know them, they can be a bit tricky to interpret.
Lucky for you, we've made a little glossary to help you out.
PUKY abbreviations and model codes:
"LR" stands for "Laufrad", which means "balance bike" in German.
"R" stands for scooter.
"M" is the smallest balance bike model.
"1" is the medium-sized balance bike (which really ought to be called "L").
"XL" is the largest balance bike.
"Classic" is a retro model, often featuring a bell, white tires, and a basket.
"Plus" comes with mudguards, a bell, and a kickstand.
"Br" means the balance bike has a handbrake.
"L" means the bike has inflatable tires, although some PUKY balance bikes have inflatable tires and no “L” in their name.
For example, PUKY LR XL Br Classic is an XL-sized balance bike with brakes, white tires, a bike basket, a kickstand, and a bell.
Also, some models have unique names without standard abbreviations.
The "TRAIL" model has wide inflatable tires and resembles a mountain bike.
The "NEXT" model has a nylon frame, inflatable tires, a kickstand, a handbrake, and adjustable handlebars to accommodate growing legs. You can even upgrade to bigger wheels down the road.
Several PUKY models come with a kickstand. They are often called something with "PLUS" (but not always). With a convenient kickstand, the scooter or balance bike can stand upright without falling over, so you don't need a bike rack for support.
How to choose the right PUKY model
Do you want a balance bike with a basket or a bell, or do you want your scooter to be foldable? What about wheel size? And can you adjust the height of a scooter or balance bike without tools?
There’s lots to consider when your child wants a scooter or a balance bike. That’s why we’re sharing our best tips, on this page and in our blog posts, to help you choose the right model, whether it’s for your toddler, preschooler, or school-age child. For example, our PUKY XL balance bike is suitable for children up to 130 cm tall. And PUKY also makes scooters for older children from 115 cm and up (so parents can borrow them, too).
PUKY balance bikes teach your child to balance on two wheels
Because balance bikes in particular are so popular, more and more children can ride a bike by age 3. PUKY balance bikes, with their combination of balance training and no pedals, simply give kids the courage to try lifting their feet and zoom downhill. Give your child a head start with a PUKY balance bike.
At Toy Academy, we've chosen to carry a wide selection of PUKY ride-on vehicles: tricycles, push/balance bikes, balance bikes for various age groups, scooters, and accessories such as helmets, baskets, bells, carrying straps, and more.
You'll definitely find the right set of wheels for your child in our selection of PUKY balance bikes.

What else do children learn from riding a PUKY balance bike or scooter?
Riding a PUKY balance bike or scooter gets your child's entire body working.
For one, your child will learn to maintain balance while moving. They'll also strengthen their back, core, arm, and leg muscles. Your little one will also be practising cross-body coordination skills. Cross-body coordination is important for helping the brain learn to coordinate movements and various brain functions. And finally, with a ride-on vehicle your child gets a great cardio workout and a healthy boost for their heart rate and circulation.
Experience also shows that balance bikes are the perfect stepping stone to learning how to maintain balance on a pedal bike.
If a balance bike isn’t really your child’s thing, don't worry - PUKY also makes balance bikes with two rear wheels - or even with two front wheels and two rear wheels, which makes it practically impossible to fall over.
Or maybe your child would prefer a scooter instead? PUKY has those too, in several models and sizes.

What size PUKY scooter is right for my child?
For all PUKY scooters in our shop, we specify the recommended age and height range. The German brand PUKY is synonymous with high quality - but quality doesn’t matter much if the scooter (or balance bike) is the wrong size.
As a general rule, the handlebar of the scooter should be at the same height as your child’s elbows. When your child's arms are bent at a 90-degree angle when they hold the handlebars, it means the size is right.
For example, if your child’s elbow is 76 cm above the ground, a scooter with a minimum height of 76 cm is suitable.

Should I choose a PUKY scooter with 2 or 3 wheels?
- We recommend getting a three-wheeled scooter for beginner riders. Your child can start exploring a three-wheeled model as early as age 2.
- From around 4 or 5, your child can practise balancing on a two-wheeled scooter. Children who are used to zooming around on balance bikes can often start on a two-wheeled scooter as well.

What size PUKY balance bike is right for my child?
The most important factor to consider when choosing the right size balance bike is your child's inseam length.
To learn how to measure your child's inseam correctly, check out our guide to choosing the right balance bike. The trick is to measure from the floor up to your child's crotch, ideally wearing outdoor shoes for the most accurate measurement. Subtract a couple of centimeters, so your child can push the bike forward with their legs at a slight angle - that's the most comfortable riding position for little legs.
Remember your bike helmet and stay safe
When buying a scooter or balance bike for your child, remember to also add a bike helmet to your basket. And don't forget safety reflectors - they’re also great to have, whether your child is riding alone or with you. You'll find the right helmet size by measuring your child's head just above the eyebrows.
Start out on a scooter or balance bike in calm, child-friendly surroundings, where your child can safely practise balancing and steering at their own pace without the stress of traffic, crosswalks, or crowds of pedestrians.

Does Toy Academy carry PUKY pedal bikes?
No, we don't carry PUKY pedal bikes. If you want to buy a pedal bike with training wheels, we recommend going to a bike shop that carries children’s bikes from brands like PUKY.
However, we do have accessories for pedal bikes, like baskets and bells. You'll find them right here on this page.
