Again! Again! Lovely baby toys for repetitive play.
Babies learn through repetition. And they absolutely love games where they can push the same button, throw the same ball, or peek under the same blanket and get the same result, again and again.
Your baby is a bit like a blank canvas, experiencing everything for the very first time. And building experience takes practice and repetition — lots of repetition. That’s why doing the same thing over and over again is such an important part of your child’s development.
As your 3–9-month-old curiously explores the world, your reactions, and their toys, they’re learning about cause and effect. And that understanding is essential. It’s about discovering that when I do this… then that happens.
So when your baby squeezes that squeaky toy you can now hear in your sleep, or insists on playing peekaboo 60 or 100 times in a row, something important is happening. They’re learning. Toys with little buttons, knobs, and bits to press, twist, and fiddle with are perfect for satisfying your baby’s urge to explore on repeat. And it’s practically part of the baby curriculum to chew on the same toy again and again, or to drop the cup or plate on the floor just to see what happens next.
You can remind yourself of all this when you’re hiding under a scarf for the umpteenth round of peekaboo. Or when that cheerful toy melody is stuck in your head on the way to work or while standing in line at the supermarket.
Your baby thrives on routines
Babies aged 3–9 months make new discoveries every single day — realising they have hands, learning to reach for a toy, managing to grab it, and discovering that it has buttons or flaps, each with its own little sound or texture. Your curious little explorer is constantly learning. And in the middle of all that excitement, it feels safe and comforting to do the same things again and again — whether it’s the familiar ritual before heading out with the stroller, or the classic game of dropping the plate on the floor just to see if Papa looks mildly defeated again.
In that sense, baby toys designed for repetition connect directly to your baby’s need for security and predictability.
For older children, daily routines make cooperation easier because they know what’s coming next and what’s expected. But even very young children benefit from routines and from being able to figure out what will happen.
Creating gentle rhythms and routines in everyday life brings calm and reduces stress, for both you and your baby. Being able to predict what happens next creates a sense of safety. Especially in the early months, your little one needs repetition to understand the flow of the day and your reactions. That’s why it’s reassuring to read the same favourite books, follow familiar lunchtime habits, and stick to a similar bedtime routine each evening.
It also helps when you’re fairly predictable in your presence and actions, rather than constantly introducing new games or reinventing the morning routine every other day.
That doesn’t mean you can’t change routines that aren’t working for you. Of course you can. But it’s helpful to have some consistency in how you settle your baby for naps, how you show affection, which comfort blanket they use, how many naps they take, how you respond to their sounds and signals, and how often you head out on little adventures together.
