The ability to perceive something visually and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is an important skill in learning geometry and math as well as understanding how sentences, sums, or a piece of knitting, among other things, are made up of sequences and patterns.
If the puzzle has a special theme, such as the universe, animals, or telling time, you can talk about it and strengthen your child's vocabulary while you're placing the pieces.
