Doing puzzles strengthens your child's fine motor skills and patience. Also, putting the pieces together is a good way to get better at understanding how parts fit together to form a whole and figuring out where each part belongs in the big picture.
Being able to perceive something visually (using our eyes) and envision what's missing from a whole is important in learning geometry and math as well as comprehending how sentences, sums, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, are made up of patterns and sequences.
