Let your child play without first having to think about how the toy works. There is no wrong or right way to play here, and there is no rulebook. The goal is simply playing and being in the present moment. We call this type of play intuitive play. It's also called "open ended play". We recommend that you seize the opportunity to observe what happens when your child plays in ways that let them use their intuition.

As opposed to types of play which are aimed at achieving a result or playing within specific boundaries, intuitive play will most often let you have a fascinating peek into your child’s independent thought process, problem-solving skills, and imagination.

Practising how to sort objects helps improve your child’s ability to sort through the many impressions they experience every day. Before we can understand what something is and what it means, we first need to understand how it differs from something else. And sorting toys specifically help with that.

Many everyday situations demand that we know how to organise and sort – for example, we use that skill when we go to the recycling depot, learn equations, or sort our laundry.

Develops important skills that really benefit your child's well-being and ability to learn:

  • Helps your child sharpen their fine motor skills.
  • Develops hand-eye coordination, a skill we use for instance when we throw, catch, or kick a ball that comes flying towards us in PE class, when we cut accurately line with scissors, or when we need to pour water into a glass without spilling.

Do you know Learning Resources?

Providing children with materials that make learning fun is important for Learning Resources - as their name implies.

In particular, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is at the centre at Learning Resources. For instance, your child can learn about coding, doing experiments, exploring their world, and building robots. For educators and teachers, Learning Resources is a learning goldmine. Coding dinosaurs, math games, and sorting animals can really shake things up in the classroom.
