Being able to perceive something visually and envision what's missing from a whole is an important skill for learning math and geometry as well as comprehending how sums, sentences, or knitwork, among other things, consist of sequences and patterns.

Often, puzzles have a special topic or theme, which you can talk about while you're doing it. This is a great way to strengthen your child's vocabulary about e.g. animals, flags of the world, or our universe.
