Or a specific shape. Ask your child how many different colours or shapes there are. Does your child know which shape each colour has? Build a simple pattern by placing e.g. a purple, a yellow, and a red piece in a row. Ask your child to repeat the same pattern. Ask your child how high they can stack the pieces before the tower falls over. Count the pieces together. Put a specific number of pieces in front of your child and help them count how many there are. Place 4-6 pieces in front of your child and observe them together. Then remove one piece while your child has their eyes closed. Ask them which piece is missing. After some practice, you can use more pieces and remove more than one.

This type of play strengthens your child’s ability to sort through objects and toys as well as the many impressions they experience daily. Before we can understand what something is and what it means, we first need to understand how it differs from something else. And sorting toys and activities specifically help with that.
