With a fixed set of rules, card games, dice games and board games are clearly defined activities without major negotiation with others. Many children find it a relief to focus on a game with clear rules as a change from wild and free play with their mates at kindergarten or school.

In addition, playing a game gives your child an opportunity to practise other important skills, such as losing. We suggest not letting your child win the game every single time. Teach your child to handle losing in safe surroundings with you. This helps make children robust and resilient, which will benefit them later in life when they have to handle things on their own and you are no longer there to protect them from defeat and disappointment.

Your child uses a wide range of skills in the classroom, and every day they're learning new academic, social, mental, and physical skills all at once. Practising one or two academic skills at home with you in a relaxed setting can make school a better experience for your child.

With educational games, puzzles, and other kinds of playful learning activities, your child can gradually get better at number recognition, logical reasoning, small multiplication tables, writing, and other academic skills.
