Garden Game - Giant Mikado
Mikado (also known as pick-up sticks) is a wonderfully entertaining game for 2 or more players.
It takes concentration, patience, and a steady hand to carefully remove the sticks without disturbing the pile.
In other words, this game helps your child improve their focus and learn to think strategically and tactically.
The goal is to collect the most points or sticks by carefully lifting the sticks off the floor or ground, one at a time.
Same classic rules, just with giant 90 cm sticks for even bigger fun.
Includes 25 sticks.
Recommended for ages 8+, though younger children can also join in with adult supervision — just be extra careful with the pointed ends.
Game rules:
The youngest player goes first.
To start the game, the first player gathers all the sticks in one hand, places their hand on the floor or ground, and releases the sticks so they fall into a messy pile.
The same player starts by lifting one stick from the pile. Only one stick may be picked up at a time, and the other sticks must not move. Once a player has touched a stick, they must try to remove that same stick rather than choosing a different one. The player may continue removing sticks for as long as the other sticks in the pile remain still. As soon as one of the other sticks moves, the turn passes to the next player.
The stick the player was trying to lift must remain in the pile. If a player successfully removes the Mikado stick (the stick with the blue spiral), they may then use the Mikado stick to help lift the other sticks.
Point values
1 Mikado stick – 20 points.
10 sticks – 2 points each.
10 sticks – 5 points each.
5 sticks – 3 points each.
5 sticks – 10 points each.
The winner
The game ends once all the sticks have been removed from the pile. Players then count up their sticks or total points, and the player with the most sticks or points wins. The player who starts the game has a slight advantage over the others, so it’s a good idea to play several rounds to give everyone a chance to go first. In the end, you can see who has won the most rounds overall.
