The donkey is a familiar face in animal fables — but what role and personality will it take on in your puppet show?

Did you know that donkeys have a clever way of protecting themselves from danger? When a donkey feels threatened, it often freezes and locks its legs, making it very hard for predators to force it to move. Unlike horses, who usually run away, donkeys choose to stand firm.

By standing their ground and using their strong legs as defence, donkeys show a rare survival strategy found in very few other animals.

Playing with hand puppets lets your child practise telling and understanding a story with a beginning and an end. This is an important skill which can be improved by telling a story again and again and preferably talking about it along the way, asking questions, and adding your own touch to the story.

When children are learning to understand stories, physical props are a great help. With hand puppets, your child can experiment with telling stories. In addition, they're a really nice way to bring a fairy tale or story to life. The storyteller is not hidden behind a book but gets to be in active contact with the little listeners, who get to join in the story instead of being passive.
