Doing puzzles is a good way to get better at understanding how single pieces form a whole and figuring out where each piece belongs in the big picture.
Being able to register something visually and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is important in learning geometry and math as well as understanding how sums, sentences, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, are constructed of sequences and patterns.
A puzzle often has a special theme or topic, which you can talk about while doing it. This is a great way to talk about anything from jungle animals to astronomy, flags of the world, or telling time and expand your child's vocabulary.
