With fixed rules, board games, dice games, and card games are clear and defined activities without major negotiation with others. Many children find it a real relief to focus on a game with clear rules as a break from free and wild play with friends at school or kindergarten.
In addition, playing games gives your child an opportunity to experience (and cope with) losing. We recommend not letting your child win every single time you play. Teach your child to handle the disappointment of losing in a safe setting together with you. This helps make children robust and resilient, which will benefit them later in life when they have to handle things on their own and you are no longer there to shield them from defeat and disappointment.
The activity helps your child develop new skills and is wonderful for your child's well-being:
- Stimulates hand-eye coordination, a skill we use for example when cutting a straight line with scissors, pouring a glass of water without spilling and making a mess, or when catching or kicking a ball that comes flying at us in the playground.
- Strengthens social skills, which, according to childcare professionals and teachers, are more important for students to practise than learning grammar and math.
