Let your child play without first having to think about how the toy works. There is no right or wrong way to play, and there is no rulebook. The goal is simply playing and being in the present moment. We call this type of play intuitive play. It's also known as "open ended play". We recommend that you seize the opportunity to observe what happens when your child plays using their intuition.
Unlike types of play which are about achieving a particular result, intuitive play will most often let you have an interesting look into your child’s own imagination, thought process, and problem-solving skills.
The activity is great for your child's well-being and ability to learn:
- Develops hand-eye coordination, a skill we use for example when cutting accurately with scissors, pouring water into a glass without spilling and making a mess, or when throwing, kicking, or catching a ball that comes flying at us in the playground.
- This is a great way for your child to develop their proprioception, which benefits their concentration and helps them build the confidence to use their body in active play.
- Supports your child's understanding of cause-effect. The ability to predict outcomes gives your child a sense of safety.
