Curiosity

This classic spin art machine is built for years of creative fun.

What happens when something spins really, really fast?

What does a washing machine have in common with tempera paint?

How can you demonstrate the forces of physics in a fun, hands-on way while helping children create colourful works of art?

The answer is a spin art machine. You might remember it from your own childhood.

Place a round sheet of paper in the spin art machine and ask a helper to turn the hand crank. You can buy the paper here in our shop.

As the paper spins, drizzle or squeeze tempera paint onto it. You'll find the paint in our shop too. Then the magic happens: centrifugal force pulls the wet paint outwards, creating colourful, one-of-a-kind patterns.

The result is a collection of beautiful abstract artworks. Along the way, your child also gets a fun demonstration of what happens to wet laundry inside a washing machine, as the spin cycle forces water out of the fabric.

Tempera paint is different from acrylic paint. Both are popular choices for children's arts and crafts and are suitable for children aged 3 and up.

About Tempera paint:
Unlike acrylic paint, which dries to form a tough, plastic-like film, water-based tempera paint dries as the water evaporates, leaving a thin, matte finish. Rather than forming a flexible layer that can sometimes be peeled away like acrylic paint, it dries to a powdery surface that can be reactivated with a light spray of water.

Tempera paint is made from pigments, water, and a starch-based binder.

For spin art, tempera paint is ideal because it dries quickly and is easy to thin with water.
