With a clear set of rules, card games, dice games and board games are clearly defined activities without major negotiation with others. For many children, it can be a real relief to focus on a game with clear rules as a break from free play with their friends at kindergarten or school.
At the same time, playing games gives your child an opportunity to learn to cope with the feeling of losing a game. We suggest not letting your child win the game every single time. Teach your children to cope with losing a game in a safe setting together with you. This helps make children robust and resilient, which will benefit them later in life when they have to handle situations on their own and you cannot protect them from disappointment and defeat.

- This type of play helps your child train their depth perception skills. For instance, this will help your child walk or cycle in traffic in a safe manner. "How fast is the car coming towards me?" suddenly becomes a little bit easier to estimate.
- Strengthens hand-eye coordination, a skill we use for instance when we throw, kick, or catch a ball that comes flying at us in the playground, when we cut accurately line with a pair of scissors, or when we want to pour water into a glass without missing.
