Wooden Sensory Rekenrek - Count to 20
A rekenrek is a fantastic tool for helping children make sense of numbers. By moving the beads, children can practise counting, compare quantities, and experiment with adding and taking away. Think of it as a wonderfully hands-on calculator for young learners. Â
The red and white beads make numbers easier to visualise, while the different textures add an extra sensory element to learning.Â
The rekenrek measures 25 x 7.5 x 7.5 cm and is made of wood.
Here are a couple of simple ways to get started:
- Move a number of beads to one side and ask your child to slide the same number of beads on the row below to the opposite side.
- Place a number of beads on one side. Ask your child to count them, then count how many beads are left on the opposite side.
- Have your child count from 1 to 20 while moving the beads one by one. Too easy? Try counting backwards from 20 instead.
- Practise simple addition and subtraction using the beads. For example, show 5 + 2 on the top row, then use the bottom row to display the answer.

Toys for learning through play
Play is essential for children’s learning, well-being, and development. Through play, children learn about themselves and the world around them.
Play helps children:
• stay curious
• focus and become absorbed in what they're doing
• take on age-appropriate challenges
• build confidence
We believe children learn best by doing things for themselves:
• by making mistakes
• by getting messy
• by falling down and getting back up again
Resilience, confidence, and courage grow through experience, one small step at a time.
That's why we carefully choose toys that encourage independence, imagination, movement, and social skills — offering just the right balance of support, freedom, and opportunities to grow.
Carefully selected toys
We carefully handpick every toy from the vast world of toys available today. The only toys that make it into our range are ones we'd be happy to give our own children.
Every toy at ToyAcademy should:
• support learning through play
• be made from durable, high-quality materials
• be safe and enjoyable for children to play with
20 years of experience as parents and professionals
