For instance, if it says a telescope has 27x magnification, it means that something which is 27 metres away from you appears through the telescope as though it's just 1 metre away.
An adult should help your child assemble the telescope and teach them how to focus and get a sharp image.
A good rule of thumb is to let your expectations for telescopes match your budget. Beginner telescopes are great for introducing your child to magnification and what it can do. The big aha moments will likely come with a more advanced instrument, which will also be more expensive, with higher magnification and more features.
