Have a go at making two lovely tealight holders from air-dry clay, decorated with flowers that are easy to shape using the silicone mould.

Set includes:

  • 250 g self-hardening clay
  • 2 tealight holders
  • Paintbrush
  • 20 ml pink paint—you can always mix in other colours from your own stash
  • Silicone mould with flower designs
  • Clay cutter
  • Modelling tool

The silicone mould is reusable for lots of fun projects like soap casting, Silk Clay, or making flower beads from polymer clay.

How to make the tealight holders:

  • Knead half of the clay thoroughly and roll it out to about 0.5 cm thick
  • Use the cutter to make a neat circle
  • Place the tealight holder on the circle
  • Now make a strip of clay about 3 × 15.5 cm and around 0.5 cm thick.
  • Wet the ends of the strip and wrap it around the tealight holder
  • Use the modelling tool to join the wetted ends
  • Smooth out any bumps on the base so the tealight stands nice and flat
  • Use a little water to make the surface nice and smooth all the way around

Repeat with the second holder.

Now it’s time to decorate your candle holders:

  • Take a small piece of clay that fits the flower mould you’ve chosen
  • Press the clay firmly into the mould. You can practise a couple of times if you don’t get all the details on the first try
  • Carefully remove the clay from the mould and create as many clay flowers as you like
  • Use the brush to dab a little water onto the holders and place the flowers wherever you like. You can use the modelling tool to gently press the flowers into place around the edges (this is a good moment to have an adult nearby).

Now—hands off!

  • When you or your child are happy with the design, leave the holders to dry for 48 hours.
  • After that, they’re ready to be painted.

Will they be a gift for someone special, or a little treasure to keep?
