Doing puzzles together strengthens your child's fine motor skills and patience. Also, placing the pieces is a fun way to get better at understanding how separate parts form a whole and figuring out where each part needs to be placed in the big picture.
The ability to register something visually (with our eyes) and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is an important skill when learning math and geometry as well as understanding how sums, sentences, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, are constructed of patterns and sequences.
If the puzzle has a special picture, such as the universe, animals, or telling time, you can talk about it and strengthen your child's vocabulary while you're placing the pieces.
