Doing puzzles is a fun way to get better at understanding how individual pieces fit together to form a whole and envisioning where each piece needs to be placed in the big picture.
Being able to perceive something visually and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is an important skill for learning math and geometry as well as understanding how sums, sentences, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, are made up of patterns and sequences.
If the puzzle has a special picture, such as time, animals, or the universe, you can talk about it and strengthen your child's vocabulary while you're placing the pieces.
