Doing puzzles together develops your child's patience and fine motor skills. Also, putting the pieces in place is a good way to get better at understanding how parts fit together to form a whole and envisioning where each piece needs to be placed in the big picture.
Being able to register something visually (using our eyes) and envision what's missing from a whole is important in learning math and geometry as well as understanding how sums, sentences, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, consist of sequences and patterns.
If the puzzle has a special topic, such as time, animals, or the universe, you can expand your child's vocabulary by talking about it while doing the puzzle.
