Doing puzzles strengthens your child's patience and fine motor skills. Also, putting the pieces in place is a good way to get better at understanding how the pieces fit together to form a whole and envisioning where each piece belongs in the big picture.
The ability to perceive something visually (with our eyes) and envision what's missing from a whole is an important skill in learning geometry and math as well as understanding how sums, sentences, or knitwork, among other things, consist of sequences and patterns.
