Doing puzzles together strengthens your child's fine motor skills and patience. Besides, putting the pieces in place is a fun way to get better at understanding how the single pieces form a whole and figuring out where each part belongs in the big picture.
Being able to perceive something visually (using our eyes) and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is important for learning geometry and math as well as comprehending how sums, sentences, or a piece of knitting, among other things, are made up of patterns and sequences.
