A monster friend introduces the idea of acceptance to your child's play. Monsters are different and are often portrayed as dangerous in stories and fairy tales. We often respond with suspicion or fear when something is outside the norm.
Playing with monsters expands your child’s understanding of what a friend can look like. Also, monster friends are popular with children of all genders, which opens up a world of shared play across other interests such as trucks, princesses, or swords. And monsters give your child’s imagination free rein - because it's completely up to your child to decide what their monster looks like and whether it has eyes on its knees, antennas, five arms, or three ears. Monsters don’t have to look "perfect" (in a normative sense), and your child can proudly introduce you to their new monster friend, who, thank goodness, is far from normal.
We carry playdough of many different colours and types and different hardness levels. Firm playdough stimulates your child’s proprioception by providing a bit more resistance. For instance, firm playdough is excellent for making stop motion movies, because the shape holds well.
It’s a calm activity that can help your child sit still for just 5 more minutes - or help them deal with long train or car rides without restlessly moving about in their seat. Particularly, for children who struggle with motor restlessness, playing with something that engages proprioception, hands, fine motor skills, and imagination while sitting still can help them stay calm.
Playdough can be either water-based or oil-based, and each has its own advantages. You can soften water-based playdough by kneading in a bit of water. But oil-based playdough tends to stay soft for years.
Of course, all the different types of playdough, sensory slime, and modelling clay we carry at ToyAcademy are CE-marked and approved in accordance with current toy safety regulations - just like all our other toys.
