Pictograms help your child understand what will be happening next. The ability to structure, organise, and plan doesn't develop until our late childhood or teenage years. So, a lot of things takes place during a day that your child actually doesn’t know is going to happen.

Children think in events rather than minutes and hours. It’s difficult for children to form a thought sequence like “first get dressed, then breakfast, then it's time to leave the house, and this afternoon I get to watch 20 minutes of TV”.

Children tend to find that their day becomes more predictable when explained visually. That's exactly why pictograms can be helpful. And children with executive function difficulties, for instance children who experience sensory overload or are on the autism spectrum, especially benefit from pictograms as a tool to plan and keep track of their day.
