Doing puzzles is a fun way to get better at understanding how single pieces form a whole and envisioning where each part belongs in the big picture.
Being able to register something visually (using our eyes) and envision a whole (and what parts are missing) is an important skill when it comes to learning geometry and math as well as understanding how sentences, sums, or even a piece of knitting, among other things, are constructed of patterns and sequences.
Many puzzles have a special theme or topic, which you can talk about while you put the pieces into place. This is a great way to strengthen your child's vocabulary about e.g. animals, flags of the world, or our universe.
