Have conversations about what happens to food inside the body, where our food comes from, and when we usually eat it. This helps to develop your child’s vocabulary and knowledge. Play food is great for imaginative play, which inspires your child to act out real-life experiences such as shopping, cooking, or being in a café.

Role play where children copy everyday activities helps to develop their understanding of the world around them. With play food, your child also gets to play and be silly with food in a way that is probably not tolerated at mealtime with real food. You can expand your child's play opportunities by playing grocery store, maybe with little homemade special offer signs. That way, you can explore both numbers and letters, and your child can build up their confidence practising polite phrases and adding up small sums.

The beach, or the sandbox, is a favourite playground experience for many children. The sand can be sculpted into fragrant cakes, huge sand castles, or roads so toy cars and trucks can work or drive around in the sand.

Get out your shovel and bucket, fine motor skills, and imagination. With the opportunity to explore small creatures at the beach, or mix water and sand, the play options become endless - and the sand and water stimulate your child's tactile sense.
